In a world that often rewards speed, distraction, and reaction, Canadian motivational speaker, trainer, and author Darci Lang offers a timely reminder: real connection starts with focus.
In the latest episode of the Ready to Real Estate podcast, TRREB President Daniel Steinfeld welcomes Lang for a conversation about building meaningful connections through intentional focus. They recorded the episode before a live audience at TRREB REALTOR® QUEST 2026.

Focus on What You Can Control
The Canadian motivational speaker, trainer, and author encourages REALTORS® to shift their attention away from the 10 per cent they cannot control and toward the 90 per cent they can influence. This mindset does not ignore hardship, Lang explains. Instead, it gives people a practical way to move through challenges with resilience, accountability, and intention.
“We have a choice in what we focus on,” Lang says. “Focus on what is good, what is positive, and what you have control over.”
The message is especially relevant to REALTORS®, who guide clients through some of life’s biggest decisions, often during times of stress, uncertainty, or change. Lang’s approach highlights the value of being present. She challenges listeners to slow down, listen with purpose, and give the person in front of them their full attention.
“Be here,” Lang says. “Meet people with purpose and intention.”
Build Connections Through Common Ground
Lang explains that people build connections when they look for common ground before focusing on their differences. By viewing others through a 90 per cent lens, people can lead with curiosity, empathy, and kindness.

“Look for what connects you, what unites you, and what makes you the same,” Lang says. “That will radically change your life.”
Lang also explains that strong leaders model the behaviour they want to see. They understand how their actions and energy affect others and how their daily choices shape team culture.
“Be the living, breathing example of what you want people around you to be,” Lang says.
Move From Complaint to Action
Lang does not suggest that people pretend every day is easy. She encourages them to make room for difficult moments and even a little complaining but stresses the importance of moving quickly from complaint to action.
“There is no quick fix, no hack, and no silver bullet,” Lang says. “You have to do the hard work of asking what it will take to get back to the 90.”
By leading with trust, gratitude, and kindness, real estate professionals can create better conversations, strengthen client relationships, and build more resilient communities.
